This pair of tall Japanese tumblers, often used for serving chilled tea or beer, is a striking example of Bizen ware, one of Japan's most celebrated ancient pottery styles. The vessels are defined by a minimalist aesthetic rooted in charcoal and earth tones, featuring a textured, horizontal "ribbed" finish known as shinogi that catches the light across its dark, metallic surface.
To achieve this signature look, the kiln is opened at a high temperature of 1800°F (1200°C), and the pottery is pulled out to be rapidly cooled. Because many pieces break during this intense thermal shock, these survivors have become quite rare. The resulting glaze transitions between deep ebony and weathered, iron-like bronze at the rim, perfectly embodying the wabi-sabi principle of finding beauty in resilient, unadorned objects forged by fire and earth.
